Two dead in storm; Flash floods in Baramulla

Heavy rains have led to flash floods in parts of Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir while a storm in Bandipora district left two women dead, officials said Wednesday.

There was also fresh snowfall in Sonamarg and other higher reaches of Kashmir on Wednesday.

Shareefa Begum, 33, and 18-year-old Mubeena Bano died after a tree fell on them during a storm Tuesday night at Chandaji in Bandipora district, they said.

HC declines to interfere in St Stephen's interview process (20:00)

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to interfere in the interview process of a panel on admission of Christian students in all subjects in Delhi University's St Stephen's College.

Justice Anu Malhotra said she did not find anything wrong in the interview process as the institute seeks to maintain its own identity. "I do not consider it appropriate to stay the interview process," she said.

The court was hearing a plea of three teachers -- N.P. Ashley, Abhishek Singh and Nandita Narain -- who are members of the college's governing body and had objected to the decision taken by the Supreme Council of the college at its meeting on May 13.

2 more children die of hypoglycemia in Bihar's Muzaffarpur; toll now 43

Two children died in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, which is reeling under an outbreak of brain fever, taking the toll this month to 43, although a top state health official maintained that the casualties were not related to the outbreak but were caused by hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia causes abnormally low level of sugar in the blood or deficiency of sodium or potassium in the body, the official said.

According to a release issued by the Muzaffarpur district administration, two children died at the SKMCH hospital here where a total of 117 cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) have been reported since June 1.

Two sisters allegedly gang-raped at gunpoint in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Two minor sisters were allegedly raped by four men at gunpoint on Tuesday evening, police said.

According to a complaint, the sisters aged 13 and 15 years were gang-raped at Kaserwa village by the four men while they went to look for their mother near a sugarcane field, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Alok Sharma said Wednesday.

The four men allegedly threatened to shoot the girls if they cried for help or revealed the incident. They have been booked and efforts are underway to nab the accused, Sharma said.

A 14-year-old boy drowned and two other teenagers were missing after they were swept away by river current while taking a holy dip on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra on Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi district, police said.

The body of Divyansh (14) was recovered while a search is on for Shivam (15) and Mithun (15), Additional Superintendent of Police Gyanjay Singh said.

The incident took place this morning at Shiasar ghat under Arwal police station area, he said. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the loss of lives.

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday observed that it prima facie found nothing against civil liberties activist Gautam Navlakha, who is accused of having links with Maoists.

The court also extended the protection from arrest granted to Navlakha till the next date of hearing.

A division bench of justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre was hearing a petition filed by Navlakha seeking to quash the case lodged against him by Pune police after the Elgar Parishad conclave on December 31, 2017 that allegedly triggered violence at Koregaon-Bhima village in Pune the next day.

Five-year-old boy dies from Ebola in Uganda: health official

A five-year-old boy who tested positive for Ebola in Uganda has died, a health ministry official told AFP on Wednesday, in the first spread of a deadly outbreak in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

"The boy who tested positive for Ebola in Kasese yesterday passed on last night in the isolation unit," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"The minister for health (Ruth Aceng) will be briefing the country about the death of the boy and arrangements to bury the body." The official said the child was likely to be buried Wednesday.

Uganda's health ministry on Tuesday said that the mother of the child was a Congolese citizen married to a Ugandan.

PM not to fly over Pakistan while travelling to Bishkek: MEA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not fly over the Pakistani airspace while travelling to Kyrgyz capital Bishkek on Wednesday to attend a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the External Affairs Ministry said.

It said the prime minister will fly over Oman, Iran and several Central Asian countries countries to reach Bishkek.

India requested Pakistan to let Modi's aircraft fly over its airspace when he travels to Bishkek. Pakistan accorded an "in principle" approval to India's request.

"The government of India had explored two options for the route to be taken by the VVIP aircraft to Bishkek. A decision has now been taken that the VVIP aircraft will fly via Oman, Iran and Central Asian countries on the way to Bishkek," MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

Hong Kong stocks also tumbled as the city was rocked by the massive protest against government plans for a controversial extradition law. The Hang Seng Index tumbled 1.73%, or 480.88 points, to 27,308.46.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.56%, or 16.34 points, to 2,909.38, and the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, lost 0.64%, or 9.83 points, to 1,528.40.

Pune cops search Stan Swami's house in Ranchi, seize gadgets

Pune police conducted a search at social activist Father Stan Swami's residence at Ranchi in Jharkhand on Wednesday and claimed to have seized some "electronic devices and other material".

According to the police, the raid was conducted as part of the ongoing probe in the Elgar Parishad case in which nine activists were earlier arrested for their alleged links with Maoists.

"Our team conducted a search at Swami's residence in Ranchi as part of the ongoing probe into the Elgar Parishad case. So far, we have seized some electronic devices and other material from his residence," a senior police official said. Swami has not been detained so far, he added.

Angry locals protest after boiler blast kills 2 in Maha

Angry locals protested outside a hospital in Buldhana district of Maharashtra after a boiler blast at a food processing company there left two persons dead and as many others injured, police said on Wednesday.

Some labourers were engaged in welding work when the boiler at the private food processing unit, located in Khamgaon area here, exploded around 6.30 pm on Tuesday, police inspector Santosh Tale said.

The impact of the blast was so severe that the workers were thrown out of the premises, killing two of them and injuring as many others, he said. The injured persons and the bodies were later taken to the City Hospital where angry locals gathered and demanded action against the food company officials, he said.
