Kolkata: A unique Durga Puja Pandal pays tribute to migrant mothers, will worship migrant mother as Goddess

This Durga Puja, a pandal in Kolkata, West Bengal will be paying a special tribute to migrant workers with a statue portraying a migrant mother with her children as Goddes Durga herself, a report in NDTV said.

The Barisha Club Durga Puja committee in Behala, Kolkata has decided to install the statue to emphasise and highlight the misery of migrant workers who were left jobless, homeless and were forced to walk hundred-thousand miles back home under the scorching sun due to the Coronavirus lockdown earlier this year.

The statue shows a mother in saree with her child on her waist along with her two daughters. Together, the mother and her children will be seen walking towards a smaller, more traditional image of Ma Durga. There will be a halo with 10 hands denoting the Goddess in traditional form, the report stated.

Rintu Das, the artist behind the idea of the sculptures said that the migrant mother is representative of a goddess .

The goddess is the woman who braved the scorching sun and hunger and penury along with her children. She is looking for food, water and some relief, said Das.

“During the lockdown, all I remember seeing on TV and reading in newspapers was migrant workers returning home on foot... Durga Puja was still months away, but the indomitable spirit of the women walking home with children overwhelmed me. In my mind, they embodied the goddess,” the artist added.

Tha Barish Club announced on Facebook that amid the battle country is fighting against Novel Cornavirus, people will be able to enjoy Durga Puja digitally this year.
