On Thursday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Tamil Nadu to inaugurate a major defence exhibition near Chennai, Tamilians angry at the Central government’s delay in setting up the Cauvery Water Management Board, despite a Supreme Court order, are venting their anger on Twitter through the hashtag #GoBackModi. Tamil Nadu has seen bandhs on the issue, with politicians, actors, farmers and citizens objecting to the Centre’s delay. Protests are planned during the Prime Minister’s visit today as well.
Prior to the Cauvery issue, Tamilians have been angry with the BJP-led central government for replacing Tamil and English milestones on Tamil Nadu highways, with Hindi and English milestones.
There is also anger at perceived interference by BJP in the ruling AIADMK government, weakened after the passing away of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
So deep is the anger against BJP that its candidate polled less than NOTA votes in the byelection held in December to the RK Nagar assembly seat in Chennai.
