Transport fuel prices continued on the daily record breaking upward movement on Monday, with the price of petrol crossing the ₹91 per litre mark in Mumbai. In the country's financial capital, petrol costs ₹91.08 per litre, up from ₹90.84 on Sunday, September 30, data on the Indian Oil Corporation website showed.
Petrol prices in the other key cities of Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai on Monday are at new record highs of ₹83.73, ₹85.53 and ₹87.05 per litre respectively, higher than the respective previous high of ₹83.49, ₹85.30 and ₹86.80 on Sunday.
Petrol prices also rose from ₹84.15 to ₹84.40 in Bengaluru, ₹88.51 to ₹88.77 in Hyderabad, ₹80.36 to ₹80.59 in Chandigarh and ₹85.29 to ₹82.83 in Ahmedabad. In Patna, the price of petrol is close to touching the psychological mark of ₹90 per litre, retailing at ₹89.87 on Monday.

In tandem with petrol, cost of diesel also rose to hit new highs on Monday.
Prices of diesel rose in Delhi from ₹74.79 to ₹75.09, in Kolkata from ₹76.64 to ₹76.94, in Mumbai from ₹79.40 to ₹79.72 and Chennai from ₹79.08 to ₹79.40.
Diesel is retailing at ₹75.22 in Lucknow, ₹80.77 in Patna, ₹78.53 in Guwahati and ₹80.36 in Trivandrum on Monday.
Sector experts attribute the high domestic fuel prices to the high rate of excise duty across the country. With fuel is still excluded from the GST regime, prices also vary according to local taxes.
The increase in transport fuel rates comes amid surging crude oil prices. Currently, Brent crude oil is priced around $83 per barrel.
