The Editors Guild of India expressses its distress and concern over the death of two journalists—one in Bihar along with his friend and one in Madhya Pradesh—under suspicious circumstances in the past few days. In Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh, Sandeep Sharma, a reporter with a TV channel, was mowed down by a truck. Sharma had exposed the nexus between a sand mafia and certain police personnel and his death is said to be linked to those he had reported against. And in Garhani, Bihar, Navin Nishchal, who reported for Dainik Bhaskar, and his friend Vijay Singh were killed when their motorcycle was rammed allegedly by a person whom they had written against.
The Guild is concerned that journalists who expose wrong doings and criminal connections of the mafia with government are being targeted. The Guild demands that both the Bihar and Madhya Pradesh governments bring speedy justice to the culprits of these heinous attacks. In Delhi, a young press photographer was beaten and molested in public by a senior police officer. These incidences confirm increase in attack on journalists.
The Guild demands strict action.
