It has been almost six months since Ex-IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt was arrested and there has been no update about him for past one month. The Gujarat Police on September 5, 2018, detained former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in Ahemdabad for questioning in a case relating to falsely framing a lawyer in a criminal case in 1998. According to the some news reports, he is lodged in Palanpur jail.
It took nearly three months for the district session’s court of Palanpur to hear and finally reject the bail application on various grounds and had stated that “it appears that prima facie the accused (Bhatt) was involved in conspiracy…”.
On February 8, Supreme Court turned down the plea of former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt seeking security for his family. A bench of Justices AK Sikri and S Abdul Nazeer had asked Mr Bhatt to approach the Gujarat High Court with his plea.
On October 4, 2018, the top court dismissed his wife Shweta Bhatt's plea, challenging the police probe and his judicial custody in a 22-year-old case of alleged planting of drugs to arrest an advocate, and said he could approach an "appropriate forum" for relief.
The court had held it was not appropriate for it to interfere in the ongoing investigation.
Bhatt was suspended in 2011 on charges of remaining absent from duty without permission and misuse of official vehicles and later sacked in August 2015.
