After storming the Maharashtra coast with wind speeds of up to 120 kmph, Cyclone Nisarga has started weakening and its intensity will reduce further by evening, India Meteorological Department said.
The landfall of the cyclone began at 12.30 PM at Alibaug and the process was completed by 2.30 PM, IMD director general Mrutunjay Mohapatra said. The storm lay 75 kilometres southeast of Mumbai and 65 kilometres west of Pune.
It has started weakening. The wind speed is currently 90-100 kilometres per hour and the intensity will reduce further by evening, he said.
The cyclone will further weaken into a cyclonic storm by evening and into a deep depression by late night, an IMD bulletin said.

The landfall process of Cyclone 'Nisarga' will continue for another hour as the rear part of its cloud is still over the sea, the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday afternoon.
The severe cyclonic storm will weaken down to a 'cyclonic storm' in six hours, said IMD in its 2.10 p.m. bulletin.
The weather bureau said that the landfall process had begun at 1 p.m. in Maharashtra's Raigad district and will continue for another hour. The wind speed has also decreased to 90-100 kilometres per hour, gusting to 110.
The IMD said that the severe cyclonic storm crossed Maharashtra coast and currently was centered on Alibag in Raigad district, over 80 kilometres from Mumbai.
The weather bureau earlier sounded red alert for at least seven coastal districts of Maharashtra, while several districts along Gujarat's coast are also expecting heavy rainfall.
Nisarga comes on the heels of Cyclone 'Amphan' which had killed close to 90 people when it hit eastern India and Bangladesh on May 20, flattening villages, destroying farms and leaving millions without electricity.

The landfall process started around 12.30 pm.
It made landfall about 40 km from Alibaug, 95 km from Mumbai.
The right side of the wall cloud passes through coastal region of Maharashtra, mainly the Raigad district. It will gradually enter into Mumbai and Thane districts during the next three hours, the IMD said in a statement.
The wind speed of the cyclone is currently 100-110 kilometres per hour, it added.

The landfall process of Cyclone 'Nisarga' has begun and will continue for three hours, the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.
The right side of the cyclone's wall cloud passed through coastal Maharashtra, mainly covering the Riagad district.
"The centre of the cyclone is very close to the Maharashtra coast. The landfall process has started and it will be completed in three hours," said IMD.
The north-east sector of the eye of the cyclone is currently entering the land. The severe cyclone will cross Maharashtra coast, close to Alibag in the next three hours.
"The cyclone will gradually enter into Mumbai and Thane district during the next three hours," stated IMD in its 12 p.m. bulletin.
The cyclone is currently whirling with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kilometres per hour 40 km away from Alibagh, 95 km from Mumbai and 325 km from Surat.

Nearly 50,000 people living in coastal areas of South Gujarat and some 4,000 residents of the neighbouring Union Territory of Daman have so far been shifted to safer places ahead of the approaching cyclonic storm 'Nisarga', officials said on Wednesday.
Police have been deployed on all the beaches in Gujarat's coastal belt and people have been asked to remain indoors, they said.
As many as 50,000 living near the coastline in South Gujarat have already been shifted to safer places while work is in progress to evacuate more people, Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue, Pankaj Kumar said.
