Congress to elect new president in June, after state polls: Congress Working Committee

The states of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the UT of Puducherry will go to polls in April-May this year

The Congress party will elect a new president in June after assembly elections in five states are over, general secretary (organization) KC Venugopal said on Friday.

Talking to reporters after a meeting of the Congress Working Committee, the party’s top decision-making body, Venugopal said, “Congress Working Committee has decided that there will be an elected Congress president by June 2021”.

The states of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the UT of Puducherry will go to polls in April-May this year.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had resigned from the post of president in July 2019.

Sonia Gandhi, whom Rahul Gandhi had succeeded as Congress president in December 2017, took over as the interim president in August 2019.
