Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, Nagpur Mayor Sandip Joshi on Wednesday said 'Janta curfew' would be observed in the city on Saturdays and Sundays during remaining two weeks of this month.
"A meeting will be convened after September 30 to decide whether the curfew will be extended," Joshi told reporters after attending a meeting with municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B, corporators and local representatives.
Nagpur district on Wednesday registered 2,052 new coronavirus cases, taking its tally to 57,482, the local administration said.

698 new COVID cases push Kuwait's tally to 96,999
Kuwait on Wednesday reported 698 new COVID-19 cases and three more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 96,999 and the death toll to 571, the Health ministry said in a statement.
Currently, 9,241 patients are receiving treatment, including 93 in ICU, according to the statement.
As many as 968 more patients have recovered, raising the total recoveries in the country to 87,187.

In two hit-and-run cases, four people, including a couple, were killed and five others sustained injuries in Hisar district on Wednesday while undertaking their early morning walks on roads, police said.
In the first incident which took place in Hisar cantonment area this morning, a husband and his wife, who were out for a morning walk, were killed when a speeding truck hit them.
Two youths, who were also walking on the road with them, too were hit by this truck and suffered critical injuries. They were admitted to a hospital in a serious condition, police said.

Two kids crushed to death by bus in UP's Pratapgarh
Two children were crushed to death by a bus here on Wednesday, police said.
The incident took place in Shamsherganj market under Jethwara Police Station, they said.
The driver of a Prayagraj-bound bus, departing from Shamsherganj, crushed Aryan (4) and his younger brother Shivay (2) under the wheels while reversing, SHO Sanjay Pandey said.
Both the children died on the spot while the bus driver fled. The locals have damaged the bus and demanded compensation for the family," he said.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination and the matter is being investigated, police said.

7 killed by lightning in Madhya Pradesh
Seven persons have died due to lightning at different places in Madhya Pradeshs Damoh district. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and former CM Kamal Nath have expressed grief over the deaths.
According to information received from the administration, three members of a family were killed in the last 24 hours due to lightning at Lamti village in Damoh district near Tezgarh police station area.
The three were working at a farm. Two other persons died at Daba village and one each in Sataria and Kunwarpur due to lightning.
Expressing grief over the deaths, Chouhan said"Seven people have died due to lightning in Damoh district. I pray to God to give peace to the departed souls and strength to the families to bear the loss."

Serum Institute gets nod for resumption of Oxford vax trials
The Serum Institute of India has received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to resume the clinical trial of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate, officials from the drug manufacturing company confirmed on Wednesday.
India is the manufacturing partner of the vaccine candidate named Covishield, developed jointly by the University of Oxford's Jenner Institute's and AstraZeneca. The Pune-based firm is looking after the trials at 17 trial sites across India.
The permission to resume comes three days after AstraZeneca announced that it has resumed trials in the UK. On September 9, the trials were halted after one of the participants in the UK reported a suspected severe adverse reaction when administered a booster dose of the vaccine candidate.
On September 10, the Serum Institute of India also paused its trials after the DCGI issued a show-cause notice to them asking for an explanation as to why the institute decided to go ahead with the clinical trial of COVID-19 vaccine candidate while doubts about patient safety are yet unclear.

B'desh urges India to revoke ban on onion export
Bangladesh has appealed to the Indian government to withdraw the ban imposed on onion export as soon as possible, keeping the import flow of onion from India uninterrupted.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam said on Tuesday: "We are expecting a positive result soon in this regard, Dhaka has requested New Delhi to revoke its ban on onion export as India earlier had made an 'unofficial' pledge to Bangladesh of a continuing supply of onion here."
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) of India on Monday issued a notification imposing restrictions on onion export with immediate effect. This decision has posed a negative impact on onion markets in Bangladesh.
