Junior engineer in Varanasi suspended for derogatory post against PM

A junior engineer posted in Varanasi has been suspended for allegedly posting derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and criticising government policies on Facebook.

Junior Engineer (Technical) Praveen Kumar, posted in Nalkoop division of Varanasi, had "made adverse comments against the prime minister on his Facebook wall using derogatory language and also shared pictures presenting himself as the future MLA", an official release issued here said.

He had also criticised the policies of the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government and had been missing from work since August 26 without informing, the release said.

Kumar has been suspended with immediate effect on the recommendation of chief engineer Nalkoop division and the district magistrate, Varanasi.

3 held on charge of glorifying terrorism in J&K

The Jammu and Kashmir Police said on Saturday that it had arrested three persons on charge of glorifying terrorism by pasting posters and displaying banners of terrorists in south Kashmir's Pampore town.

The posters were pasted and banners of terrorists displayed on September 6 in Pampore by Nadeem Ahmad Dar of Dranbal, Irshad Ahmad Sofi of Tulbagh, and Shakir Ahmad Dar of Jalalabad in Sopore area of Baramulla.

"Incriminating material, including two computer systems along with accessories, and one printer were seized from a printing press, namely Rampage Advertising Agency, in Rengreth in Srinagar," police said.

An FIR has been registered by police, which is investigating.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday consoled the demise of social activist Swami Agnivesh saying all his life he fought with great courage and conviction for the most marginalised sections of society.

In a statement, Sonia Gandhi said, "I am grieved to learn the passing way of Swami Agnivesh. All his life he fought with great courage and conviction for the most marginalised sections of our society, fearless in defending their rights and in facing upto those who exploited and oppressed them and terrorised the poor, often at great personal risk."

The Congress leader said that Swami Agnivesh was a "most powerful" and "effective" voice for the vulnerable and the defenceless.

Swami Agnivesh's energy and faith in constructive social activism was indeed admirable and inspiring, she said.

Recalling the works of Swami Agnivesh, Sonia Gandhi said, "He worked with equal dynamism to promote interfaith, understanding and dialouge, non-violence, and justice for the tribal people of Chhattisgarh, caught in a violent conflict. He will be widely mourned and India will honour the memory of this brave and noble soul."

Swami Agnivesh died after suffering a cardiac arrest at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences on Friday evening. The hospital attempted to revive him for 30 minutes before declaring Agnivesh dead at 6.30 p.m.

The social activist was admitted at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), Delhi on Tuesday. He was critically ill and suffered from liver cirrhosis and had been on ventilator support since Tuesday owing to multi-organ failure. His condition deteriorated on Friday.

Body of Swami Agnivesh will be kept at the Bandhua Mukti Morcha (BMM) office on Saturday to allow the public to pay their final respects, albeit adhering to Covid rules, said Professor Vithal Rao Arya, his close associate and former general secretary of Bandhua Mukti Morcha.

Global COVID-19 cases top 28.3mn: Johns Hopkins

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 28.3 million, while the deaths have increased to over 913,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Saturday morning, the total number of cases stood at 28,331,121 and the fatalities rose to 913,015, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US accounted for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 6,443,048 and 192,968 respectively, according to the CSSE.

India is currently in the second place in terms of cases at 4,562,414, while the country's death toll stood at 76,271.

In terms of cases, Brazil ranks third (4,238,446), and is followed by Russia (1,048,257), Peru (710,067), Colombia (694,664), Mexico (658,299), South Africa (646,398), Spain (566,326), Argentina (535,705), Chile (430,535), France (401,890), Iran (397,801), the UK (364,085), Bangladesh (334,762), Saudi Arabia (324,407), Pakistan (300,371), Turkey (288,126), Italy (284,796), Iraq (282,672), Germany (259,735), Philippines (252,964), Indonesia (210,940), Ukraine (152,373), Israel (148,564), Canada (137,676), Bolivia (125,172), Qatar (121,287), Ecuador (114,732), Kazakhstan (106,729), Dominican Republic (102,232), Romania (101,075), Egypt (100,708) and Panama (100,330), the CSSE figures showed.

The other countries with over 10,000 deaths are the Brazil (129,522), Mexico (70,183), the UK (41,703), Italy (35,597), France (30,901), Peru (30,344), Spain (29,747), Iran (22,913), Colombia (22,275), Russia (18,309), South Africa (15,378), Chile (11,850), Argentina (11,148) and Ecuador (10,836).
