Social and Human Rights Activist Swami Agnivesh passed away on Friday evening, 10 days before his 81st Birthday.
Known as ‘Secular Swami’ among his friends and foes, social activist and the face of Bandhua Mukti Morcha (Bonded Labour Liberation Front) Swami Agnivesh had been battling between life and death for at least four days.
Admitted to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi, Swami had been on ventilator since Tuesday due to multi-organ failure. He was admitted to the hospital due to liver cirrhosis. Though a liver transplant was planned earlier, it was postponed due to deterioration in his condition.
Centre constitutes empowered group for OFB corporatisation
The Union government constituted an Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) on Friday to oversee the corporatisation of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).
Headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, it includes Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Santosh Kumar Gangwar and Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievance and Pension Jitendra Singh as members.
The empowered group will guide the entire corporatisation process, including transition, support and redeployment plans vis-a-vis board employees while safeguarding their salaries/wages and retirement benefits. Matters related to various categories of employees, including pensions of existing staff, would also be looked into by the EGoM.

1,578 more test corona positive as J&K tally crosses 50K
As many as 1,578 more persons tested coronavirus positive in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, with the total cases crossing the 50,000-mark in the Union Territory.
The Information and Public Relations Department said that 808 new cases were reported from Jammu division and 770 from Kashmir division as the total coronavirus cases climbed to 50,712.
Of these, 34,689 patients have recovered so far.
Nine more patients succumbed on Friday -- 6 in Jammu and 3 in Kashmir division -- taking the UT's death toll to 854.
There are 15,169 active cases in J&K, of which 7,964 are in Jammu division and 7,205 in Kashmir division.

A doctor couple from Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district is part of a Noida hospital team which has completed 1 lakh COVID-19 tests.
"We are part of a team which completed 1 lakh COVID-19 tests. Starting with just 50 tests a day in April, we are now conducting 2,000 tests per day," Chalasani Ajay Ghosh told IANS.
Hailing from Nuziveedu in Krishna district, Ghosh and his wife Tammineni Krishnalatha work at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida.

Aftab Shivdasani tests positive for COVID-19, under home quarantine
Aftab Shivdasani on Friday said he has tested positive for COVID-19 and has been advised to quarantine at home.
Shivdasani shared the news in statement posted on Twitter, saying that he "showed minor symptoms" of the novel disease, following which he got himself tested.
"Hello everyone, hope you all are fit and fine and are taking care of yourself. Recently, I started showing minor symptoms of a dry cough and a mild fever and I got myself tested for COVID-19.
"Unfortunately the results came out positive and under the medical supervision of doctors and the authorities, I have been advised home quarantine," the 42-year-old actor said.

All lines of the Delhi Metro will start operating Saturday, including the Airport Express Line (New Delhi to Dwarka Sector-21).

Huge wildfire on Turkey-Syria border brought under control
A massive wildfire affecting more than 150 hectares of land in Turkey's Samandag and Antakya districts near the country's border with Syria was brought under control after 93 hours, the media reported.
The cooling works in the area took place via land and air, the Hurriyet Daily News reported.
While there was no loss of life as a result of the fires, financial damage in the area will be determined after the investigation.
Firefighter crews, two aircraft, 182 waterjet engines, 24 construction vehicles, 45 technical personnel, and a total of 792 personnel participated in efforts to extinguish this year's largest fire, which broke out on September 5 and quickly spread due to winds.

NIA files chargesheet against Tania Parvin in jihadi 'hiring' case
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday said it filed chargesheet against Tania Parvin in Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) online recruitment module case.
The chargesheet said she became member of 70 jihadi groups on social media, which propagated terrorist ideology advocating a skewed version of 'Islamic Jihad'.
The chargesheet was filed on Thursday in a Special NIA court in West Bengal's Kolkata. She has been charged under sections of the strict Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
An NIA spokesperson in Delhi said, "During investigation it was revealed that Parvin had got radicalised in the cyberspace by Pakistan based cadres of LeT. She gradually became part of about 70 jihadi groups on social media, which propagated a terrorist ideology advocating a skewed version of Islamic Jihad with an aim to further radicalise and recruit impressionable Muslim youth."

Global COVID-19 cases top 28 million
The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped the 28 million mark, while the deaths have increased to over 908,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
As of Friday morning, the total number of cases stood at 28,054,396 and the fatalities rose to 908,017, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.
The US accounted for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 6,395,904 and 191,753 respectively, according to the CSSE.
India is currently in the second place in terms of cases at 4,465,863, while the country's death toll stood at 75,062.
In terms of cases, Brazil ranks third (4,238,446), and is followed by Russia (1,042,836), Peru (702,776), Colombia (686,851), Mexico (652,364), South Africa (644,438), Spain (554,143), Argentina (524,198), Chile (428,669), Iran (395,488), France (392,243), the UK (360,534), Bangladesh (332,970), Saudi Arabia (323,720), Pakistan (299,949), Turkey (286,455), Italy (283,180), Iraq (278,418), Germany (258,149), Philippines (248,947), Indonesia (207,203), Ukraine (149,146), Israel (145,526), Canada (136,956), Bolivia (124,205), Qatar (121,052), Ecuador (113,206), Kazakhstan (106,661), Dominican Republic (101,716) and Egypt (100,557), the CSSE figures showed.
